Maintain Water-Miscible Cutting Fluids

Water-miscible cutting fluids, also known as soluble or emulsifiable oils, play a critical role in metal machining processes. Proper maintenance of these fluids is essential to ensure optimal machining performance, extended tool life, and a safe working environment. In this guide, we'll explore key practices for maintaining water-miscible cutting fluids effectively.

Soluble cutting fluids and semi-synthetic cutting fluids which mix with water and form a milky white emulsion. And also contain additives to improve their lubricating properties, rust and corrosion inhibitors and a biocide to help control foul smell.

As we know, water-dilutable coolants have a good cooling to maintain the cutting temperature within the limit, remove chips, and surface protection to preserve the machined part from corrosion. But, it still has many uncertain factors that are hard to maintain. Regularly inspect the cutting fluid for signs of contamination, such as odor, discoloration, or a decrease in performance. Follow these tips and you’ll considerably increase your chances of keeping production at a consistent high level.

pH Level Maintenance

It's important to keep an eye on the pH that shows the quality of the coolant. The pH is the measurement of coolant acidity or alkalinity. Most cutting fluids have a pH of 9-9.6, but there are also products that have a lower pH during use. In most cutting fluids, the pH should be between 8.8 and 9.2.

Why does coolant have an unpleasant smell? When the pH value drops below 8.0, it means that the fluid is becoming less efficient and has a higher risk of both corrosion and microbial contamination. That can lead to corrosion problems and bad odors. If the pH value exceeds 9.5, then the fluid poses a risk for dermatitis and skin irritation. Check the pH value daily if possible but at least once a week, either using a pH meter or an IoT oil skimmer for compensation and a control machine to check the pH immediately.

Concentration Control

The concentration of the cutting fluid must be kept at the recommended level if it is to work optimally. If the concentration is too high it will produce more mess, increase the risk of skin problems and also increase cutting fluid consumption. Too low a concentration results in bacterial and fungal contamination, corrosion, and poor lubrication and foaming, which reduces the lifespan of the tools and cutting fluid.

It is therefore important to regularly measure the concentration, ideally daily but at least once or twice a week. Adjust the concentration as required after measurement. A weaker concentration of approximately 1 - 2% should normally be used for topping up the system.

Filtration

Is the coolant tank always full of oil and chips? Many people know that they need to clean the coolant tank from time to time but are not sure why. In the past, cutting fluids were typically only changed when they had an unpleasant smell.

Actually, a properly cleaned machine tool will reduce your overall fluid costs. Swarf and other particles must be removed by filtration. These impurities can reduce the life of the emulsion as they help to increase the growth of bacteria.

Modern-day water-based metalworking fluids have made remarkable strides in improving their bio-stability. If left uncleaned dirt and chips (swarf) in the tank for any length of time, it is beginning to stink from the effects of bacterial infestation. You have no doubt encountered a variety of unpleasant odors. Worse yet, rancid coolant can negatively affect tool and machine life, finishes, and a host of other key metalworking processes and parts. Therefore, It is essential to clean machines to optimize the performance of the coolant tank.

And lastly, change the cutting fluid regularly as you can. When coolant gets old its pH changes, which can damage parts, tools and affect cutting performances, so changing the coolant every half-year is a good idea. By following these maintenance steps and guidelines, you can ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your water-based cutting fluid. Proper maintenance not only saves costs associated with fluid replacement but also promotes a safer and more efficient machining process. At Hai Lu Jya He, our expert team is dedicated to assisting you in selecting the perfect cutting oil for your equipment.
