Why do most cutting fluid problems come back to concentration?

Cutting fluids only lubricate and cool correctly at the right concentration. Too low, and the emulsion turns unstable, biocides lose effect, and you get rust, rough surfaces, foul odor, and tool damage. In one real case a plant suffered a wave of returned parts from rusted workpieces, and inspection found the concentration at just 2.5 percent against a recommended 6 percent. How do you measure and adjust concentration?

Beware false readings: tramp way oil or hydraulic oil floating in the tank distorts the refractometer, so combine the reading with visual inspection and filtration.
