How to Choose Cutting Fluid for Steel and Stainless Steel
"Steel" is not one machining problem. Free-cutting carbon steel, alloy steel and tough stainless behave very differently, and the same shop often mixes them. The fluid choice comes down to three questions: is it general carbon or alloy steel, or difficult stainless and heat-resistant alloy; do you need a water-based fluid or a neat oil for heavy, high-lubrication cuts; and does the same tank also run non-ferrous metals such as aluminum or copper. Before the selection table, it helps to see why stainless in particular is demanding, because that is what drives the fluid.
Why Steel, Especially Stainless, Is Demanding to Machine
Free-cutting carbon and alloy steel
machine readily. A general water-based semi-synthetic handles most of it, and the main question is whether the line also runs non-ferrous metals.
Stainless and heat-resistant alloys
are a different problem, driven by three traits: it work-hardens, so if the tool rubs instead of cutting cleanly the surface hardens and the next pass is harder still, and the fluid needs strong lubricity to keep the edge cutting; it holds heat, because low thermal conductivity concentrates heat at the tool tip and wears it fast, so the fluid has to cool the cutting zone and cut friction with extreme-pressure lubrication; and it is gummy and ductile, forming built-up edge and poor-breaking chips that hurt finish.
So a stainless fluid has to deliver lubricity and cooling right at the tool tip and resist built-up edge. Light to medium work suits a water-based emulsion built for difficult-to-cut materials; heavy cutting, deep-hole and high-finish work suits a neat oil with extreme-pressure lubrication. Carbon and alloy steel on mixed lines suit a ferrous and non-ferrous semi-synthetic.
Steel and Stainless Selection Table
| Machining need | Why it matters (material behavior) | Type | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon / alloy steel, water-based (general, also ferrous plus non-ferrous mixed) | Readily machined; main concern is staining non-ferrous parts on mixed lines | Semi-synthetic | WILL AIE-920 (ferrous and non-ferrous), WILL AIE-329C |
| Stainless and difficult materials, water-based (work-hardening, heat at tip) | Needs lubricity to keep cutting and cooling to protect the tool tip | Emulsion / semi-synthetic | MORESCO 88SU, WILL AIE-369 |
| Heavy cutting, deep hole, high finish | High tool load needs lubrication a water-based fluid cannot give | Neat oil | HLJH NA-158T, HLJH NA-308T |
| Mixed with aluminum or copper (non-ferrous in same tank) | Must lubricate for cutting without staining the non-ferrous parts | Neat oil | HLJH NN series (NN-158T, NN-308T) |
MORESCO grades are imported from Japan, with HLJH as the authorized distributor in Taiwan; WILL and HLJH grades are made by HLJH in Taiwan. White iron here means stainless steel. 88SU and AIE-369 have no standalone English product page yet; AIE-369 links to the AIE-329 page until then. Grade specifications are available on request (TDS).
Grade Basics
| Grade | Type | pH (1:20) | Recommended Brix% | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MORESCO 88SU | Emulsion | 9.3 | 8-10% | Chlorine-free, boron-free. Developed for difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium and stainless, good non-ferrous compatibility. |
| WILL AIE-369 | Semi-synthetic | 9.4 | 8-10% | Lubrication-enhanced, no flash point, good hard-water stability. Suits special aluminum, carbon and alloy steels. |
| WILL AIE-920 | Semi-synthetic | 9.5 | 8-10% | Boric-acid free, REACH and RoHS compliant. Works on ferrous and non-ferrous, fast defoaming. |
| WILL AIE-329C | Semi-synthetic | 9.4 | 8-10% | Special additive package, good hard-water stability. Also suits carbon and alloy steels. |
| HLJH NA-158T | Neat oil | On request | On request | Non-chlorine neat oil for brass and stainless heavy cutting. Specifications on request (TDS). |
| HLJH NA-308T | Neat oil | On request | On request | Non-chlorine neat oil for aluminum and stainless heavy cutting. Specifications on request (TDS). |
| HLJH NN series (NN-158T / NN-308T) | Neat oil | On request | On request | Non-active sulfur, chlorine-free, for copper, brass and aluminum alloys, deep-hole and turning. Specifications on request (TDS). |
How to Narrow the Choice
1. General carbon or alloy steel.
Most runs on a water-based semi-synthetic. If the line also sees aluminum or copper, a ferrous and non-ferrous grade such as AIE-920 keeps you on one fluid and cuts staining risk on the non-ferrous parts.
2. Stainless and heat-resistant alloys.
Because stainless work-hardens and holds heat, lubricity and cooling at the tool tip both matter. A formula developed for difficult-to-cut materials holds up, and if the tank also runs titanium or aluminum, compatibility decides it.
3. Heavy cutting, deep hole, high finish.
When tool load is high or the operation is deep-hole or sliding-head, a neat oil gives the lubrication a water-based fluid cannot. Choose a non-active sulfur type to avoid staining, and plan the post-machining clean if plating or coating follows.
4. Mixed non-ferrous in the same tank.
If steel shares the tank with copper, brass or aluminum, the NN series is built for that mix, non-active sulfur and chlorine-free so it does not stain the non-ferrous parts.
Common Industry Applications
Food, medical and semiconductor equipment:
stainless frames, fittings and chambers where cleanliness and corrosion resistance matter.
Automotive and general parts:
carbon and alloy steel shafts, gears and fasteners, often on mixed lines with aluminum.
Energy and heavy equipment:
alloy and stainless valve bodies, flanges and structural parts in heavy cutting.
Precision components:
sliding-head and deep-hole work on stainless and alloy steel where neat oil gives the finish and tool life.
Four Things to Confirm Before You Choose
1. Steel type:
free-cutting carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless and heat-resistant alloy.
2. Operation and tool load:
turning, milling, deep-hole, tapping or heavy cutting.
3. Water-based or neat oil:
driven by the machine and the finish and lubrication you need.
4. Other materials in the tank:
any aluminum, copper or titanium, and in what proportion.
FAQ
Q1. Which fluid suits stainless steel machining?
Stainless work-hardens and holds heat, so pick a water-based formula developed for difficult-to-cut materials for lubricity and cooling, such as an emulsion built for titanium and stainless. For heavy cutting or deep-hole work, a neat oil with extreme-pressure lubrication suits better.
Q2. One line runs carbon steel and aluminum. Can I use one fluid?
Yes. A semi-synthetic that runs ferrous and non-ferrous and still protects the non-ferrous parts from corrosion lets you manage one fluid and carry fewer line items. Send us the proportion of each material and the operations and we will help confirm.
Q3. When should steel use a neat oil instead of water-based?
When tool load is high, the operation is deep-hole or sliding-head, or you need a higher surface finish with high cutting resistance. Choose a non-active sulfur neat oil to avoid staining, and plan the cleaning step if plating, coating or assembly follows.
Q4. What is the difference between the MORESCO and WILL / HLJH grades?
MORESCO grades are imported from Japan, with HLJH as the authorized distributor in Taiwan; WILL and HLJH grades are made by HLJH in Taiwan. The grades on the same row are matched to the same machining need, and formulas and specifications differ. For lead time, ask our sales team.
