Choosing the Right Cutting Oil
Most people know that cutting oils dissipate heat generated in the operation, reduce friction and remove chips away from the cutting zone that can easily be cut during metal processing. BUT, how to select proper cutting oils to use? We’ll share the KEY as below.
In the market, we can see many kinds of cutting oils, such as neat cutting oils, soluble cutting fluids, synthetic cutting fluids, semi-synthetic cutting fluids, multifunctional cutting oils. However, most people purchase multi-purpose cutting oils since they have no idea the differences. But, it perhaps caused the worst situations for metal processing.
First of all, you have to know the metals in use, and consider the predominant machining operations. You have to differentiate between hard, low-machinability materials, such as stainless steel, and softer, ductile materials, like aluminum.
Then decide what type of cutting oil you want to use, water-based cutting oil or neat cutting oil. In short, neat cutting oils blend mineral oils and other additives and are used for cutting without further dilution which provide excellent lubrication. And, water-based cutting fluids need to mix with water that usually forms a milky and emulsion which has a good cooling performance, and is easy to clean during machining.
Some cutting oils are more compatible with certain materials than others. For instance, neat cutting oils without active sulfur are suitable for brass and aluminum, as they will not stain or tarnish the finished parts. And aluminum alloy although easy to cut, but use water-based cutting oils you will get a bright mirror finish. Therefore, specific cutting oils will be the best choice when you have adopted them.
On the other hand, cutting oil serves specific functions based on the difficulty and speed of the machining, no matter if you use water-based or neat cutting oil. For machining operations, easy machining operations (turning, forming, drilling, milling, etc.) can be performed at higher speeds and require high levels of cooling. The milder operations can be performed with lower viscosity of cutting oil. You can choose your cutting oil by distinguishing between situations that emphasize a need for cooling and situations that emphasize a need for lubrication.
