Metalworking Fluids

Today, modern cutting fluids are subjected to a variety of demands. Therefore, metalworking fluids (MWFs) play a crucial role in the metalworking industry that cutting fluids must be effective, economical, and free from ingredients that are harmful to health and the environment.

The properties that are sought after in a good cutting fluid are the ability to:
■ Keep the workpiece at a stable temperature.
■ Prevent rust on machine parts and cutters.
■ Maximize the life of the cutting tip by lubricating the working edge and reducing tip welding.
■ Ensure safety for the people handling it (toxicity, bacteria) and for the environment upon disposal.

Broadly there are four types of cutting fluids – soluble (emulsion), semi-synthetic, synthetic & neat oils. Each type is defined by the amount of mineral oil it contains. Soluble cutting fluids contain the most mineral oil, while semi-synthetic cutting fluids contain lower amounts of oil, and synthetic cutting fluids contain no mineral oil. Next, we are going to introduce these metalworking oils about their difference and functions.

 Neat Cutting Oils

In the first place, neat oils are non-emulsifiable and very useful in machining operations where they function in undiluted form. To achieve the best lubrication that often uses neat oils however they may have poor cooling characteristics. Besides, their composition is a base mineral or even petroleum oil. Therefore, this type is also recommended for heavy-duty cutting.

 Soluble Cutting Oils

Soluble cutting fluids usually form an emulsion after mixing them with water. They function well in their diluted form and offer great lubrication in addition to heat transfer performance.

 Semi-synthetic Cutting Fluids

Semi-synthetic fluids are a combination of soluble oils and synthetic fluids. Some people prefer the semi-synthetic ones due to their ability to combine the benefits of both mineral and synthetic cutting fluids. Besides, the heat transfer performance and cost of the semi-synthetic fluids fall between those of the soluble and synthetic fluids.

 Synthetic Cutting Fluids

Lastly, synthetic fluids do not contain mineral oil base or petroleum which offer the best cooling performance with the extended tool and sump life.

In conclusion, each one of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on machining process (light-duty to heavy-duty cutting) and metal materials (ferrous or non-ferrous). As we know, the difference between those types is mineral oils amount and additives in it. For example, if we chose synthetic cutting fluids, then lubrication is not the best but there is excellent wash ability.
